Tom Poitras, drum teacher at the New Jersey School of Music, obtained his degree in Music Education from Rowan University. He continued studying after college with Carl Motolla, the great Joe Morello, Peter Erskine and John Riley.
Tom Poitras has performed with the Haddonfield Symphony, various wedding bands including his own bands "The Real Time Band," "Interlude" and many other groups.
Tom has performed for various shows including "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Annie", "Footloose," and "Anything Goes" among others.
He also performed with the original rock group "The Shakes," featuring Bobby Campanella.
Tom played with the Denis DiBlasio Quartet for four years. The band performed throughout the country and recorded two compact discs which included 3 of Tom's original compositions. The group opened for Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinson, Special EFX, Stanley Clarke and Diane Reeves among others. This group also performed clinic/concerts at various schools around the country.
Other diverse groups that Tom has performed with include the jazz/fusion group "Defunk Club, (with Dave Falciani) and the great saxophonist Ben Schacter's group, "Trio of Many" (performers in this group included Gerald Veasley, Tyrone Brown, Charles Fambrough and Jeff Lee Johnson).
Tom also toured the United States, Central America, Turkey and Greece with the groups "Daria" and the "Patsy McCrae Show Band."
Tom has performed locally and nationally with the "Steve Kramer Trio," his own "Tom Poitras Quartet" (which included Tyrone Brown, Jesse Andrews and John Valario among others), the progressive rock band, "Hand Farm," with Scott McGill, "The Richie Cole Big Band," the blues group "Stinger" and the jazz/blues band "Beau's Paradise," (which featured the great pianist Brian Trainor) and spent 6 years performing with "The Fabulous Greaseband."
He can be presently heard drumming with "Big Bleu," "Stage Left," & the local modern country band "Eastbound & Down."
He is also currently the drummer for Mary Wilson & The Supremes (Philadelphia/Atlantic City area performances).
