Janet Robertson M.A., MT-BC
Music Therapist

Music therapy sessions at the NJ School of Music with Janet Robertson

Janet Robertson is a music therapist with over 30 years of experience working with a variety of individuals with various levels of disability and learning differences. She holds a Master’s Degree from Hahnemann University, now Drexel University, in Music Therapy and a Bachelor’s Degree from Messiah College in Psychology with a minor in music. She is board-certified through the Certification Board of Music Therapy and participates in regular training opportunities to keep updated with new research and information in the field.

She brings to NJ School of Music a history of working in other community music schools in the area and other settings including senior centers, preschools and community mental health outpatient centers. She offers a person-centered approach to each session and includes families in the process when applicable. In addition, she encourages coordination of goals with other modalities such as speech, occupational and physical therapy approaches. Each session is tailored to the unique needs, abilities, and interests of the student. Activities such as songwriting, playing rhythm instruments and singing allow opportunities for creativity and self-expression.

While violin was her main instrument, Janet plays piano, guitar, autoharp, ukelele. She combines a variety of percussion instruments and singing to engage students in participation. She incorporates aspects of mindfulness, such as breathing techniques for self-regulation and grounding techniques to help students calm and focus attention. She enjoys working with all types of students and has a unique perspective when working with students on the Autism spectrum.

Janet enjoys cycling, reading books, gardening, volunteering with local non-profit agencies and spending time with her husband and three children who are triplets and her dog Snickers.
